One Roman Name, Split Three Ways

Around AD 715, a Greek patriarch named Germanus gave the Roman soldier who pierced Christ's side at the crucifixion a full name: Gaius Cassius Longinus. That's medieval Christian tradition, not anime — the weapon itself became known as the Holy Lance, a relic fought over by emperors and Crusaders for centuries before Evangelion ever borrowed it. Roughly thirteen hundred years later, the show took that one name and split it three ways, handing each third to a different spear.

The Spear of Longinus came first — a giant, red double-helix bident that runs through the entire franchise, from the original TV series through every Rebuild film. In the anime it's thrown from the Moon by Eva-01 and can pierce any A.T. Field, no exceptions. At 22cm (8.7in) and just 30g (1.1oz), it's the lightest piece in the whole Vault — a lot of legend packed into very little weight.

The Spear of Cassius is the second third of that name — the weapon Mark.06 draws at the end of 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, a red double-helix shaft topped with a green-gemmed spearhead, wielded by Kaworu Nagisa. It's the spear that stops Eva-01's transformation into a god-like being during Near Third Impact — arguably the single most consequential spear-throw in the franchise.

The Spear of Gaius is the odd one out. Longinus and Cassius are both older than the show itself; Gaius is built mid-story, in 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, by Misato Katsuragi and Ritsuko Akagi from the wreckage of the AAA Wunder. Shinji Ikari uses it to rewrite the world without a single Eva left standing — at 60g (2.1oz), it's also the second-heaviest piece in the Vault, which tracks: humanity built this one to last.

The Two Weapons Nobody Named — So We Did

Not every weapon in Evangelion got an official name, and we weren't going to leave two mechs standing there empty-handed in the description field.

The Red Scythe is our fan-art take on the nameless, curved weapon carried by Mark.09, the mech that first appears in 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. EvaWiki lists it only as "a scythe-like weapon" — no in-universe name exists anywhere in the source material. At 18cm (7.1in) and 38g (1.3oz), ours does.

The Cone Spear is the other one — the nameless, drill-tipped lance Unit-05 carries into 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance to intercept an Angel. EvaWiki's own description doesn't go further than "a weapon resembling a jousting lance." We measured it, weighed it, and gave it a name a customer could actually search for.

By the Numbers: The Heaviest Weapon Is the Shortest One

18cm (7.1in) and 87g (3.1oz) — the Cone Spear ties for the shortest weapon in the Vault and is, by a wide margin, the heaviest. 22cm (8.7in) and 30g (1.1oz) — the Spear of Longinus is the longest weapon here and the lightest. Length and weight don't move together in this lineup, and the reason is the casting itself: every piece is a single die-cast zinc alloy pour, and a drill-tipped cone holds a lot more solid metal per centimetre than a slender forked bident does.

If you're deciding where something lands on a shelf, weight is the number that actually predicts stability — not length. The Cone Spear wants a stand or a solid ledge; the Spear of Longinus will balance on almost anything.

Because the Cone Spear (18cm (7.1in), 87g (3.1oz)) is a solid, drill-shaped casting with very little hollow space, while the Spear of Longinus (22cm (8.7in), 30g (1.1oz)) is a long, slender forked shaft. Same material, very different shapes — length and weight don't track together here.

What's actually the difference between Longinus, Cassius, and Gaius?

They're three thirds of the same Roman name — Gaius Cassius Longinus — split across three different spears and three different owners: Longinus is the oldest and lightest, Cassius belongs to Kaworu Nagisa's Mark.06, and Gaius is the one built by human hands in the finale, not inherited from anywhere.

Did the Red Scythe and Cone Spear have real names in the show?
