Heavy Metal Middle-earth: Ranking Our Top 3 Sword Replicas by Sheer Density
Let’s be honest: the worst feeling in collecting is picking up a cool-looking sword, and it feels like... nothing. Like painted plastic or hollow aluminum.
You want heft. You want to feel like you are holding a piece of Dwarven or Elven engineering.
At BlacksmithSONG, we cast in solid Zinc Alloy. But due to different blade shapes (thickness vs. length), the weights vary wildly.
I put our entire Lord of the Rings collection on the scale, and the results were... weird. The biggest swords aren't always the heaviest.
If you are a "Texture and Weight" kind of collector, here are the Top 3 models you need to own.
#1. The Unexpected Champion: Sting
-
Weight: 195g (0.43 lbs)
-
Length: 30cm
-
Why it’s a brick: Blade Thickness.
This defies physics, but here we are. Sting is the heaviest item in our LOTR lineup.
It is nearly double the weight of the much longer Andúril (104g).
How? Because Sting is a "Leaf-Blade." It is short, but it is wide and thick. It doesn't have a deep fuller (groove) to shave off ounces. It is a solid wedge of metal.
-
The Experience: When you unbox this, be careful. It lands in your hand with a thud. It feels indestructible. If Samwise Gamgee needed a hammer, he could probably use the flat of this blade.
#2. The Noldor Powerhouse: Galadriel’s Sword
-
Weight: 140g
-
Length: 30cm
-
Why it’s heavy: Complex Hilt Casting.
We usually associate Galadriel with light and magic, not brute force. But our Galadriel’s Sword replica is a beast.
At 140g, it beats out Gandalf’s sword.
The weight here comes from the hilt. It’s a complex, multi-layered casting designed to look like pearl and gold. It balances the long 30cm blade perfectly. It feels substantial, not delicate.
#3. The Old Reliable: Glamdring
-
Weight: 128g
-
Length: 30cm
-
Why it’s heavy: Classic Proportions.
Gandalf’s Glamdring is the gold standard.
At 128g, it feels exactly how a "Bastard Sword" (Hand-and-a-Half) should feel in miniature. It is heavier than the Ranger Sword and Anduril, giving it an authoritative presence.
It sits in the "Goldilocks Zone"—not as wrist-breakingly dense as Sting, but heavy enough to feel premium.
The "Weight-to-Length" Ratio
This is for the data nerds. If we look at how much metal you get per centimeter of length, the difference is even crazier.
| Sword Name | Length | Weight | "Density Score" |
| Sting | 30cm | 195g | 6.5g per cm (Extreme) |
| Galadriel's | 30cm | 140g | 4.6g per cm (High) |
| Glamdring | 30cm | 128g | 4.2g per cm (Solid) |
| Andúril | 30cm | 104g | 3.4g per cm (Agile) |
See the pattern? Just because Andúril is the "King's Sword" doesn't mean it's the heaviest. It was designed to be fast (agile). Sting was designed to keep a Hobbit alive.
The Verdict: What Should You Buy?
-
If you want the most "Bang for your Buck" (Metal-wise): Buy Sting ($29.99). You are literally getting more alloy for the same price. It feels like a premium paperweight that could survive a nuclear blast.
-
If you want a balanced display piece: Buy Glamdring ($29.99). It feels right.
-
If you want elegance with hidden power: Buy Galadriel’s Sword ($29.99).
Heavy lies the hand that holds the sword.
