Star Metal vs. Valyrian Steel: The Visual Duel Between "Dawn" and "Blackfyre"

30 Dec 2025 0 comments

Let’s be honest for a second. If you look at a display rack of medieval sword replicas, it’s usually a sea of grey steel and black handles. It can get monotonous.

In the lore of Game of Thrones, there are two swords that break this rule visually. One is forged from dragonfire and magic (Valyrian Steel), and the other is forged from a literal falling star (Meteorite).

At BlacksmithSONG, we make both. But they serve very different roles in a collection. Today, I’m putting Dawn (The Sword of the Morning) and Blackfyre (The Sword of Kings) side-by-side to see which "Super-Metal" aesthetic reigns supreme.

The Challenger: Dawn (The Pale Blade)

  • The Look: Milky, Silvery-White.

  • The Specs: 22cm | 70g

Dawn is weird, in the best way possible. In the books, George R.R. Martin describes it as "pale as milkglass." It’s not Valyrian steel; it’s older.
To capture this, we didn't use our standard gunmetal finish. Instead, the Dawn Replica uses a brighter, almost pearlescent plating.

  • My take: It pops. If you have a dark gaming setup (black desk, dark mousepad), this sword reflects light beautifully. At 22cm and 70g, it’s smaller than our newer models, but that unique color makes it stand out even from across the room. It looks "holy," fitting for Ser Arthur Dayne.

The Champion: Blackfyre (The Dark Blade)

  • The Look: Smoky, Rippled, Oxidized.

  • The Specs: 30cm | 141g

On the other end of the spectrum is Blackfyre. This represents the pinnacle of Targaryen engineering.
We deliberately made the recesses of the ripple pattern darker on this model than on Longclaw. It creates a "burnt" aesthetic.

  • My take: This feels like a weapon of war. At 141g, it’s double the weight of Dawn. The contrast between the black blade and the gold dragon-wing guard is aggressive. It dominates the space it occupies.

The Comparison: Light vs. Shadow

When you put them together, the contrast is striking.

  • Dawn looks elegant, almost fragile (though in lore it's indestructible). It represents the chivalry of the Kingsguard.

  • Blackfyre looks heavy and imposing. It represents the conquest of the Iron Throne.

Technical Note:
Keep in mind the scale difference. Blackfyre is a 30cm "Standard Class" model, while Dawn is a 22cm "Compact Class" model. If you are a stickler for consistent scale, they might look odd right next to each other. I recommend placing Dawn on a separate, smaller stand, or using it as a specialized letter opener while Blackfyre stays on the main shelf.

Which One Should You Buy?

I won't give you a generic "both are good" answer. Here is my specific recommendation:

  1. Get Dawn ($19.99) if you are a hardcore book fan. The show didn't do justice to this sword's appearance, but our replica tries to honor the "milkglass" description. It's a subtle, unique piece for a crowded desk.

  2. Get Blackfyre ($29.99) if you want presence. The 30cm size and the 141g weight make it satisfying to hold. It’s the better choice for House of the Dragon viewers.

The Fallen Star or the Dragon's Fire? The choice is yours.
