Forging the Frost: The Engineering Behind the 16cm Leviathan Axe Metal Replica
Welcome back to the forge. In our last teardown, we discussed the absurd, desk-crushing 125g weight of the Blades of Chaos. But Kratos’s journey didn't end in Greece, and neither does our craftsmanship.
Today, we lower the temperature and look at a weapon of precision, mourning, and tactical frost: The Leviathan Axe.
If you want to see the icy glint of the dwarven steel before we dive into the specs, watch our forge-diorama footage below. (Keep an eye out for Faye's golden handprint on the rocks—we know our lore).
The Forge Data: Precision Over Brute Force
Unlike the chaotic cleaving power of the twin blades, an axe requires an entirely different approach to weight distribution. Here is the physical profile of our current Midgard champion.
| Weapon Classification | Length | Total Weight | Material Base | Finish / Details | Price |
| Leviathan Axe | 16 cm | 74 g | Solid Zinc Alloy | Faux-wood handle, runic wash | $19.99 |
| Blades of Chaos (Pair) | 13 cm | 125 g | Solid Zinc Alloy | Antique Wash & Magma Fill | $29.99 |
The 74-Gram Balance: Why Lighter is Sometimes Better
When you look at the hand-held scale shot above, you might wonder why a 16cm axe is almost 50 grams lighter than the 13cm dual blades.
The answer is structural realism. If we cast the entire axe shaft as a thick, dense block of metal, it would feel like a crowbar, not an axe. The magic of the Huldra Brothers' craftsmanship was balance.
By utilizing a slightly slimmer mold for the handle and concentrating the mass in the intricately carved axe head, this 74g piece feels perfectly balanced. It rests across your fingers effortlessly, making it an incredibly satisfying "fidget" item for your desk.
The Illusion of Wood in Cold Zinc
This is where the mold-making gave us headaches. How do you make freezing cold zinc alloy look like warm, carved ash wood?
Take a close look at the bindings in the hilt detail shot below.
-
The Grain Etching: The mold isn't smooth. We etched micro-striations into the steel mold itself so the casting comes out with a physical "wood grain" texture.
-
The Wash Process: We apply a multi-layered brown/copper patina wash. The dark liquids pool in the microscopic grain lines we carved, simulating the natural dark veins of aged wood.
-
The Gold/Brass Banding: To break up the handle, the metallic bindings and the pommel ring are electroplated in a subtle, aged brass tone. This two-tone metal process is why this axe punches way above its $19.99 weight class.
Carving the Frost: The Blade Geometry
The head of the Leviathan Axe is a masterpiece of Nordic design. Unlike a polished medieval broadsword, this blade is covered in scrolling, deep-relief runic carvings.
When you place it in a display—like our snowy setup featuring an unwelcome green visitor from Odin
—the dark wash inside the runes makes the silver edge pop dramatically. The geometry is sharp enough to look dangerous, but forged safely for display.
Your Desk's New Centerpiece
Because of its long handle and curved head, the Leviathan Axe offers great display versatility. While it looks stunning resting horizontally across a natural wood block, we highly recommend elevating it.
Check out how it sits on our vertical display stand.
This vertical orientation takes up minimal desk space while maximizing the visual impact of the dwarven axe head.
Whether you're chopping through your daily tasks or just need a frosty companion for your gaming setup, the Leviathan Axe is the quintessential collector's piece.
