What Is Sting?

Sting is a small elven blade out of a lost city of the elder days, pulled from a troll-hoard alongside two royal-forged mates and carried first by a certain pocket-sized burglar. He named it himself, after using it to see off a giant spider in a darkened wood. It later passed to an even smaller pair of hands for the last, longest road of the story.

A Doorway in the Green

We built a quiet green hollow for this one: deep moss underfoot, a round little door set into a mossy bank, a cluster of tall mushrooms standing guard, a rocking chair and a stack of well-worn books off to the side, and a scatter of snail shells that clearly aren't in a hurry to leave. It's the kind of ground a blade like this was never meant to be drawn on — which is rather the point. Every photo on this page is a real shot of the real replica inside that handmade set. Elrond identified all three blades from that troll-hoard as coming from a lost elven city of the elder days, and the pairing shows: the goblin-cleaver found beside it was pulled from the same hoard on the same morning, and the sword that was broken and remade walked the very last stretch of the same road, carried by two very different kinds of hero.

The Honest Size Check

At 30cm (11.8"), Sting is a short sword by human standards and a knife by an elf's — but for the small-handed original owner, it was a full-sized blade, hilt to belt. There's a ruler in the photo set if you want the exact number instead of the comparison. What the description won't tell you is the heft: pick it up next to the in-hand photo and see if the weight matches what you expected.

One Pour, One Body

Each piece is die-cast in zinc alloy as a single body, then hand-finished by the two of us. The scrollwork on the crossguard and the flowing script running down the blade's fuller are shaped into the mold itself, holding their lines under a macro lens instead of blurring out. The scabbard is its own cast piece, with a swirled silver chape at the tip — the blade slides free clean, no drag.
