The 100g God Coin: Engineering the Guardian Shield God of War Metal Replica

13 Mar 2026 0 comments

Welcome back to the forge. If you’ve been following our engineering teardowns, you know we have obsessed over the absurd mass of the Blades of Chaos and the towering 35cm structure of the Draupnir Spear.

We love our blades and blunt-force trauma here at BlacksmithSONG. But Kratos didn't survive Midgard by just swinging blindly. The true art of combat is the perfect parry.

Today, we look at the quiet protector of the armory: The Guardian Shield.

Before we pull apart the physics, take a look at our studio diorama below. We dropped it onto raw soil and moss, surrounded by dozens of tiny, snapped arrows. The shield holds the line.

The Forge Data: The "God Coin" Paradox

We crowned this shield the "Unsung Diorama Defender" in our recent Ultimate Metal Forge Awards List. Now, it's time to explain why with pure math.

Armor Classification Diameter (Size) Total Weight Material Base Finish Signature Price
Guardian Shield 10.5 cm 100 g Solid Zinc Alloy Micro-scale texturing, painted reverse straps $19.99
Ingrid Sword (For Context) 22 cm 89 g Zinc Alloy Slender, elven blade design $19.99

Think about that physics comparison for a moment. We forge swords that are twice the length of this shield, yet the shield is 11 grams heavier.

At 10.5cm, this sits in your hand essentially the size of a premium coffee coaster. Look at the hand-held scaling shot above.

When you pick it up, the 100g mass surprises you. It feels like an immensely thick, ancient "God Coin" plucked straight out of Tyr's vault. There is zero hollowness. It’s a pure, dense puck of die-cast defense. Try holding down your desk blueprints (or dodging office paperwork) with this; it does not move.

Micro-Texturing the Front Plates

When a casting mold is forced into a circular, puck-like shape, finding depth is difficult. A poorly forged shield just looks like a stamped tin plate.

To recreate the interlocking mechanical feel of the Guardian Shield as Kratos deploys it from his gauntlet, we had to rely on micro-texturing. Check the macro details of the brass and oxidized-iron finish:

Notice the repeating "fish-scale" or cross-hatch patterning radiating outward from the central starburst? That requires chemical etching deep inside the mold before the molten zinc is ever poured. Once the casting is cooled, the dark antique wash floods into these thousands of microscopic lines, immediately pushing the raised bronze outer ridges and the chaotic overlapping side-hooks into a dramatic, 3D relief.

The Secret Blacksmith's Test: Flip It Over

Here is the truth about the $19.99 replica market: Most manufacturers cast an incredibly detailed front face, but leave the back completely blank, flat, and hollowed out with injection pin-marks.

We don't forge cheap tourist souvenirs. We build armory loadouts.

Look closely at the reverse-side studio shot.

When you flip the Guardian Shield over, you don't see flat iron. You see the internal bracing mechanism. Most importantly, we incorporated molded, realistically colored black straps that cross over the inner cavity. It represents how a Spartan would actually brace his forearm against a lethal strike from a Valkyrie. It is this hidden dedication to the lore that separates a decent piece of metal from a true collectible.

Anchoring the Desk Setup

How do you display a flat disk? Laying it directly on the desk hides the art. As suggested in our Display Mechanics Guide, a shield demands angle.

We include a custom, angled easel stand with this shield. Prop it up at a slight incline against your speaker base, or slot it directly behind your Leviathan Axe , and it instantly ties a scattered collection into a curated Norse exhibition.

If this Guardian feels too heavy for your aggressive playstyle, compare it with its lethal twin—read our teardown on the [12.5cm lightweight parry machine, the Dauntless Shield!]
